Austin Plumbing FAQ
Costs & Quotes
How much does a plumber cost in Austin?
Most repairs land between $150 and $600. Water heater replacement runs $1,400–$2,200 for tank units, $3,200–$5,500 for tankless retrofits. Emergency service adds $129–$249. See the full 2026 Austin price guide for ranges across every job type.
Do you charge by the hour?
No — flat quotes approved before work starts. If we find something unexpected, work pauses and you approve a new number first. The diagnostic visit ($89 standard, or $129–$249 emergency) is credited toward the repair.
Do you charge extra for emergency or weekend calls?
The emergency call-out fee varies by hour and distance ($129–$249), quoted before we dispatch. If you proceed with the repair, the fee is credited. Holidays carry a disclosed 25% premium — you hear that on the phone, not on the invoice.
Austin-Specific Stuff
Is Austin's water really that hard on plumbing?
Yes. Austin Water's supply averages roughly 180 PPM hardness; wells in Lakeway, Bee Cave, and Dripping Springs often exceed 300 PPM. Scale builds in tanks, coats elements, and clogs aerators. It's the single most common driver of plumbing wear in this metro — which is why we test hardness at every water-heater and softener quote.
My Austin Water bill spiked. What now?
Check the low-flow indicator on your meter with everything off — if it's moving, you have a leak. Run the isolation test (shut off the heater's supply; if the meter stops, it's hot-side). Then call us: detection is $250–$450 with a written report, and that report is exactly what Austin Water wants for their one-time leak adjustment.
Why do so many Austin homes get slab leaks?
Three reasons: copper pipes in direct contact with shifting black-clay soil, high municipal pressure in many neighborhoods, and water chemistry. Our climate cycles wet and drought, so the ground never stops moving. A healthy PRV and sensible pressure are your best defenses.
Licensing & Trust
Are you licensed in Texas?
Yes. Work is performed by or under a Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners (TSBPE) licensed plumber, we're insured for residential and light commercial work, and license numbers go on every quote on request.
Do water heater replacements need a permit in Austin?
Yes — the City of Austin requires a permit for water heater replacement. Our quotes include permitting and haul-away. Anyone quoting dramatically below market is likely skipping it, which can bite you at sale or insurance time.
What if something breaks after you leave?
Workmanship is warranted for one year, and manufacturer parts warranties pass through to you in writing. If our repair fails, we come back and make it right — that's what "done right the first time" costs us to honor.
Practical
Should I repair or replace my 9-year-old water heater?
In Austin, 9 years is the danger zone for an unmaintained tank. If the tank is sound (no seam moisture, no rust), a flush + anode rod buys years for $120–$180. If it's corroding, replacement math wins — and adding a softener doubles the next unit's life.
Can I flush my own water heater?
Often, yes — garden hose on the drain valve, run till clear. But seized valves on older Austin units are common, and a snapped valve is an emergency. If the unit is 8+ years old or you've never flushed it, having us do the first one is cheap insurance.
How fast can you actually get here?
Emergencies: 20–45 minutes inside our five core zones (Central, North, South, West, East Austin), 45–70 minutes across the rest of Travis, Williamson, and Hays. Scheduled work: usually same-day or next morning.
